NEW PROJECTS

ok... there really is only one new project...

wire_chrysalis_beads.jpg (60657 bytes) wire_chrysalis_beads2.jpg (77762 bytes)

Chrysalis Beads

Created under the pressure of wanting to teach for Hooked On Wire, these beads came to me while driving over highway 17 and were almost called Highway 17 Beads. I thought then of a title more elegant like "pupa" but choose "chrysalis" when I realized "pupa" recalls things less glittery as does "Highway 17"! The Chrysalis Beads are about 1-1/2" long and about 3/4" in diameter. My favorite small beads used for encrusting so far have been Japanese nickel-plated 11/0 seed beads, 4mm crystal bicones with a 2XAB finish, 5mm freshwater pearls, and 4mm Swarovski crystal pearls. Watch for kits and project directions to be available on the website.

*Side Note:

Hooked on Wire is a wire and bead retreat put on by The Beading Frenzy in conjunction with Leela Beads--run by two of my favorite bead people: Susan Kazarian and Lisa Niven Kelley. This year, in addition to bringing back the featured teachers from last year--Lisa Niven Kelley, Barb Switzer, and Dallas Lovett--they have added several evening classes for students at a loss for what to do in the limpid nightlife scene of Santa Francisco and others who'd like to participate in the retreat but must forego the $465 expenditure.

NEW BEADING MESSAGE BOARD

I've enrolled for a free message board online through ProBoards. There are a number of categories I've already set up, but I'm sure it will evolve as beaders join. There are two polls so far--one on your favorite beading technique and another on your favorite bead store. There are also threads to talk about and ask questions on specific beading techniques.

When you arrive, but register and then click on "General Board". That will take you to where all the good stuff is. However, as I type this, they are performing an upgrade to the site so try again a little later if it doesn't work the first time.

To try is click here:

UPCOMING BEAD & BUTTON ARTICLES

These two projects were recently accepted to be included in Bead & Button Magazine. I believe they will appear sequentially in the next 2 issues, so keep your eyes peeled!

BEAD & BUTTON 2005

Milwaukee, WI. June 12 th- 19th

On Tuesday, June 14th I fly out of San Jose for Milwaukee, Wisconsin where the largest US beader show awaits--Bead & Button Magazine's Bead and Button Show 2005. Many of you know this already but I will be teaching two classes during my stay there. On Friday, June 17th, I'll teach Embellished African Helix in an all-day class and Sunday, June 19th, I'll teach Wrapped and Wrapped Again in a half-day class. My aunt, Winny Stockwell, and I will travel together--she is my mother's youngest sibling. We've met twice to work on bead stringing, basic wire, and knotting with silk and she's signed up to take a PMC class while I'm off helping Lisa Niven Kelly in her all-day class. I've thought for yours it would be great to teach at this show. I am so excited that this is finally happening.

OFFINGER'S BEAD & ART GLASS FEST

Orlando, FL. September 29th - October 2nd

Registration begins June 15th. This show is run by the event company that organized Bead and Button's past shows--Offinger Event Management. They run a number of craft shows every annually. This year is the first year they add a strong beading aspect to their mainly glass show. I'll offer up the Embellished African Helix Bracelet in an all-day class on Friday, September 30th, Tubular Ndebele Necklace in a half-day class on Saturday, October 1st, and Extraordinary Jewelry Workshop in an all-day class on Sunday, October 2nd. The lovely contact found me through the Bead & Button Show. As you might guess by also reading information about the next show, I will likely travel the Eastern US area for the interim week. How fun!

LAPIDARY JOURNAL'S BEAD FEST

Ft. Washington, PA. October, 6th - 9th

Registration available now! Here's the last show of the year I've got on the schedule so far. I'll be teaching the Scroll Link Bracelet on Thursday, October 6th as a half-day class, Wrapped and Wrapped Again as a full-day class two times on Friday, October 7th and Sunday, October 9th, and Peyote Stitched Cuff as a half-day class on Saturday, October 8th. I'm getting tired just thinking of all the preparations and travel! When I get down to the teaching everything will be fine, but getting there will be the battle! There are a number of teachers I've been wanting to meet who will also be teaching!

KITS

Because I've been creating kits to be available for my Bead & Button Show classes, I've been motivated to begin creating other kits. So, in addition to the tutorials on the website you will also notice (soon, I hope) that there will be kits. This will start small and hopefully bloom. The first kits will be: Sculptural Peyote Cuff, Peyote Cuff, Embellished African Helix Bracelet, Scroll Link Bracelet, and Wrapped and Wrapped Again Bracelet.

REPEATABILITY ADDED TO BASICS AND WIRE CLASSES!

Rather than maintaining more classes, I am restructuring current 4-week classes to fit the needs of students of different experience levels. Students who have taken Extraordinary Jewelry Workshop but want to learn more, can repeat the class with the new information added. The same idea goes from Wire Jewelry Workshop. The Part II class and the Pearl & Gemstone Knotting classes offered during this past Winter and Spring sessions did not garner as much excitement as anticipated. The restructuring is an answer to this. If you would like to repeat a class, I encourage you to contact me in advance so we can discuss your areas of interest! Call or email me any time! 408-348-7003 or contact@msrachel.com.

QUOTE IN LAPIDARY JOURNAL ARTICLE

Hazel Wheaton, Managing Editor at  LAPIDARY JOURNAL caught wind that I do quite a bit of teaching through park & recreation programs. We did a phone interview and I never imagined I sounded so flat!

"But many programs, tucked away in spare rooms in community centers or schools, are less visible. Rachel Nelson, a jewelry instructor who teaches with a double-handful of different Park & Rec programs in the California Bay area, finds herself in a different facility for each program. 'Los Altos is an old school that was closed down, and now it's a community center. Capitola is definitely a dedicated community center. Redwood City has two centers, and both have a nice new feeling, with lots of activity. Cupertino is a dedicated community center but it's a little more quiet. One of my best friends had her wedding reception there, and it was sort of strange--it looked really similar to a room where I taught!' "

Then I got a little snobby and she quoted me at the end of the article:

"In California, Nelson admits to a bit of skepticism based on her experiences. 'I haven't seen that there's a lot of talk about certification or degrees. If you're an expert, or can pass yourself off as an expert, you can teach for the Parks & Rec programs. I'm a bit dubious of other parks & Rec classes, just because of that fact.'"

PRIVATE LESSONS IN STUDIO

I am still pleased with our little cabin in the wooded mountains of Mount Herman. So much so that I am not offering private lessons here. Here's more info

STUDENT WORK

Also, if you've taken a class or classes with me, take a photo of the learned piece of technique and send it to me to be included in the new STUDENT GALLERY! On the old website there was a page dedicated to student work, but it didn't transfer to the current  website. I have all those pictures and would also like to add the work you are proud of!
