SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2006 BEAD NEWS |
||
|
Greetings Dear Beader,
Do you ever wonder if this bead madness will ever end? I certainly do. I also wonder how it ever reached this fever pitch. But, it is nice to know we are in good company. In one email sent to me in recent weeks by Rebecca Bell, she asked "how can I stop this madness?" And, I wonder at what questions arise for new students as they watch me lose my composure over a few crystals. A conversation with my husband the other night is another example. I had just returned from attending the Northern California Bead Society meeting with my friend Susan and Colin asked about the speaker and how things went. I said the speaker was fine and that Susan and I talked about beads the whole way there, over dinner, and the whole way back. He looked at me slyly and asked, "how could you and Susan talk about beads for so long?"
My Best, Rachel |

Chain Huit Earrings This gold earrings were created out of the want for a pair of earrings to match the Ootheca Aureat to wear to my friend Jen's sister's wedding. They came out pretty good so they got a name. "Chain" and "Earrings" for the title are pretty self explanatory but the "Huit" if French for the number eight, which the base of the earring resembles. The vase in the picture was my Oma's.
I will likely submit this for publishing in a magazine and kit it on the site. So, watch out for that.
Ingredients: handmade 20-gauge g/f earwires, 24-gauge g/f wire, 3mm Swarovski crystals in aurum 2X, and a whole bunch of uneven lengths of very small g/f chain found in a 30 year old bead collection

Just a few days before teaching the Bead Bezeled Cabochon at The Beading Frenzy I was shopping for beads at The Shepherdess in San Diego, and decided to pull beads for the sample piece I'd demonstrate with for my students. This is the piece which came out of that collection. The glass centerpiece was purportedly made by Marcie Stone's husband. The centerpiece was made into a necklace by adding spiral rope chain.
Ingredients: Japanese seed beads in 11/0 and 15/0, filigree s/s clasp, Silamide A and one very lovely borosilicate cabochon.

You may already know this but I work with Susan Kazarian's The Beading Frenzy as her Class Director. While casually talking about the Fall/Winter 2006 class schedule Susan suggested I teach a flat herringbone cuff class. I went home that night and started this 26-bead wide cuff. As I worked on the piece my first thought was, "this is going to be an awesome piece!" My second thought was, "uh, this may be too wide for people's liking." It turned out to be a spectacularly wide cuff and feels great against the skin but many times as I was beading it up I thought, "when is this going to be over?" The class was scheduled for 9/23 and was not a go, so we will likely schedule it again in the first class session of 2007.
Ingredients: 11/0 Japanese triangles in 3 colors, Fireline 8lb. test, and a couple of 8mm Swarovski crystals in amethyst satin

Ootheca Topace It was very exciting to complete this Ootheca Cuff. To date this is the fourth one I've completed--Irid, Aureat, Turqueise, and now Topace. All the original beads for this piece were collected at The Shepherdess in San Diego while visiting friends a few weeks ago. As you may have noticed above, this cuff now comes as a kit.
Ingredients: 11/0 Japanese seed beads in topaz AB, 3mm Swarovski crystals in crystal copper, 22-gauge sterling silver wire, 3 sterling magnetic clasps, and Silimide A. |

You may or may not know this already but there is a section of this website called Student's Work where pieced born from classes students have taken with me and from my written directions and kits as inspiration for others. In recent weeks Cynthia Poh took one class Bead Bezeled Cabochon and purchased several sets of directions. Here are a few of the beautiful pieces this prolific beader has created recently. |

If you live in the California Peninsula area I hope you choose to come to Bead Circle at The Beading Frenzy. It is a monthly event held at The Beading Frenzy in San Mateo, CA where you bring your projects and bead with like-minded bead brains. We had our first bead and laugh-packed Bead Circle this past Thursday, 9/21. Cros1tini with roasted bell pepper hummus and fancy butter cookies were on hand for the six of us who showed up to bead. Two regular customers of The Beading Frenzy, Susan the owner, two of my new seed bead students and myself beaded and chatted for 3 hours. The class room seats 12 folks with another table in the store to seat 4 more. Please consider joining us. Do it for yourself. Do it for your unfinished projects. Do it for your beads! |
|
Here are classes scheduled from now until the end of the year. All these classes are located in the California Bay and Monterey Areas with no classes outside California scheduled until 2007. For the full schedule click here. |

At the end of March 2007 there is a large boat leaving Galveston, TX for Mexico, on which a lot of beading is going to be done. Dona Anderson, Sharilyn Miller, Heather Powers, and I will teach classes on the cruise. I believe there are a few spots left. For more information visit Bead Cruise. |

Thank you to my family for their continued support of my beading endeavors, particularly to Colin, my Mom & Mitch, Aunt Winny, Aunt Lanny, Aunt Ellen, and Vicky & Wayne. Thank you to Cynthia Poh for sharing photographs of her beautiful pieces. Thank you to Marcia and Jeannette for continued support and giving me the opportunity to pique your bead brains. Thank you to Susan Kazarian of The Beading Frenzy for holding Bead Circle on every 3rd Thursday of the month, what a dream to bead with other beaders! Thank you to Jane, I'm glad we ran into each other at Beads N Things because I had a chance to visit both Creative Castle and San Gabriel Bead Company on my Southern California trip we talked about. What awesome stores! |
