August 2008 Bead News from Rachel Nelson-Smith
Live Love Bead
Happy Bead Greetings to You!

Summer has been a bead-ful time for me so far! I hope you're finding time a little creative time, too! There are some fun new things to catch up on in this month's Bead News!

Yes, that is a photo of me on the left, taken by talented photographer Jeffrey Jay Luhn. With all the exciting happenings these days and a few more coming up, it was time for a fresh look. The piece being created in the photo is a recent collaboration with extraordinary glass artist Wayne Robbins. There is an additional photo of the piece, a short movie, and a little background in my blog for a closer look. Photos by Wayne will soon be in my possession and posted to the blog!

Bead and Button Show 2008 came and went and it was incredible this year! The beads, the projects, the pageantry! It has only just past, but I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to the 2009 show. If you haven't been to this yearly event, 2009 may be the year to make your way to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Hopefully, I'll be there with you!

Louisiana is beckoning, and strangely I'm looking forward to the heat and humidity! I'm sure that won't last for long! In just a few days, 8/21 to be exact, I'll be enjoying the company of Beads R Us in Alexandria, LA. If you live in the area, come on down and take the Ootheca Cuff and H. Liliripes Cuff classes!

Well, that's all I'm going to blab about in this opening section! Enjoy this Bead News and I hope to bead with you soon!

My Best,
Rachel Nelson-Smith

Open Invitation

Last time the Bead News came out, I was still reeling from both a computer crash and a move of household and workshop. I'm happy to report many important files were recovered in spite of the event and the settling in process has gone very smooth. In fact, I'd like to invite you to make a time to visit the new workshop! It is in a secret spot in Downtown Santa Cruz. But, once you're in the door, you'll know you've reached Beadland!

So, make a time to come for a tea visit or for a lesson. And, when we get hungry for food we have a wide array of dining within walking distance and when we get hungry for beads, we can visit the very first bead store that put any sort of trust in me--Bead It!

This Book is the "Must Have" of Fall!

I can hardly wait for this one to come out, and not just because a profile has been included on Rachel Nelson-Smith! Here's a book synopsis:

Versatility, innovation, inspiration - that's what The Masters series offers crafters, with an engaging and up-to-date survey of the finest contemporary work by approxiately 40 leading artists in specific media. Beadweaving takes the spotlight here and readers will find the showcased pieces eye-opening in their originality. Each highlighted master takes center stage in an informative eight-page feature that includes nearly a dozen gorgeous, high-quality photographs and a short essay by the curator placing the impressive work and its creator in context. These outstandingly talented and imaginative artists include Valerie Hector, whose beaded designs are a statement in bold modernity; Jeannette Ahlgren, who fashions intricate loom-woven vessels with subtle gradations in color and graphic, geometric patters; and Marcia DeCoster, who uses her right angle weave techniques to create shimmering jewellery in rich jewel tones. Beadweaver and author Carol Wilcox Wells serves as the juror of this remarkable collection.

The book can be pre-ordered for a very very low price from Amazon.com here.
